Having been around since the 1970's video poker is a kind of hybrid game.
It was derived from video slot machines and (of course) poker. In general
a standard 52 card deck is used, although there are some games like
Joker's Wild where jokers are used. In any event, all video pokers are
some kind of variation of standard poker.
To the best of my knowledge, the standard hand values are always used,
i.e. three of a kind beats two pair, full house beats a three of a kind,
a Royal flush is the absolute best hand possible.
The most popular variation is probably "Jacks or Better Video Poker".
In this variation of the game, five cards are dealt, the player decides
which cards (if any) to hold, the remaining cards are replaced with new.
At this point if the player has at least a pair of jacks he/she wins.
Payouts are determined by the probability of making each hand. So, if the
player has 1 pair of jacks, they break even (the bet is returned). Here's
a few example hands:
A, K, 2, 2, 5: Not a winner, the pair of 2's is less then a
pair of jacks.
A, K, 2, 2, 2: This is a winner three of a kind (2's) is a
better hand then a pair of jacks
J, K, A, A, 4: This is a winner but the payout is the same as
it would be if it were a pair of jacks.
Video Poker combines both Luck and skill. The luck part is the cards
that are randomly dealt to the player. The skill part encompasses much
more then simply knowing what to hold and what to fold. In this article
we'll discuss some of the things every video poker player should be
doing, regardless of their game play strategy... Read More to
