I received an email recently from a reader who was bragging that her Texas Hold’em game play has greatly improved, since she started playing in online sit & go tournaments. She went on to say that not only does she feel like she is a better player, she enjoys playing a lot more now that she’s gotten over her initial fear of sitting in at a poker tourney. This is not uncommon and there are a couple of logical reasons why.

First, when you’re playing in a cash game, it’s possible to lose your entire bankroll on a single hand. When this happens, you’ll have to make an additional deposit before you can play again. In tournament play, your entry fee buys you a certain number of chips (1,500 is a typical amount), if you go all in and lose, you’ve simply lost your entry fee and you most likely will still have some money left in your bankroll. Also, in most tourney’s multiple players will finish “in the money”. For example, in a typical single table sit & go tourney, the top three finishers will earn something. Meaning, if you make it through to the final three, you’ll win back your entry fee plus a little something extra.

Next, when you’re playing in a cash game; players tend to come and go. It’s frustrating to just start getting a read on a particular player then have them simply up and leave the table. Further, a new player is usually pretty quick to hop in and take their place. Now, you have to start watching this new player and hope you can get a read on their style of play before they also take off. This doesn’t happen in tournaments as players who leave prior to the end of the simply lose. Also, tournaments are closed once play has begun so there is no worry of a new player sitting in.

Finally, just as you’re trying to get a read on the other players at your table, the other players are trying to get a read on you. It takes time to cultivate the appropriate table reputation. It makes sense for your opponents to head for an easier table, if they see you dominating the table in a cash game. Once again, this is not an issue in tournament play as leaving the table means forfeiting any chance of winning.

So as you can see, if you’re a “thinking player”, it makes perfect sense that your game will improve once you try tournament play. I’d advise any newbie poker player to first study the basics of the game then learn a tight Texas Hold’em strategy, then jump in to the exciting world of tournaments.

If you’re new to the world of , you want to play desperately but you don’t want to look too “green” then you should probably brush up on some . You don’t have to learn how to speak a new language to look like a pro because learning just a few terms can make a few fear you at the table!

Some of the most common terms like trips, quads or ole one eye are pretty obvious pointing to three of a kind, four of a kind and the notorious one eyed jack. When you’re looking to impress some avid online poker players, brushing up on a few terms that aren’t so common will do the trick.

Let’s look at a few hands you may have and the correct terminology of portraying a big boy at the table. After all, the last thing you want to say when you see two aces in your hand is, “I have a pair” so let’s look at the terminology for pairs.

A-A= these are called “Pocket Rockets”.
K-K= these are called “Cowboys” or “Elvis Presley’s” and some times “Penn & Teller”
Q-Q= often called “The Twins”, “The Ladies”, “The Hilton’s” or “The Dirty Duo”.
J –J = sometimes Jacks are called “Jokers”, “Hooks” or “Jerky Joe’s”.

These valued cards often have some wacky names and it may seem hard to keep up with some of them but you’ll soon realize that’s not so bad compared to some others. For instance, take a look at the slang on these babies.

2-2= “Ducks” or “Deuces”
3-3= “Prom Night” or “Crabs”
6-9= “Top or Bottom”, “Delight” and “Big Lick”.

A-K= Big Slick
K-J= “KoJak”
A-J= “Apple Jacks” or “Apple Fritter”

The terminology listed above can help you but only to an extent.

To be seriously efficient in a poker game, learn a few other terms to show that you are experienced and you mean business, everyone bluff’s sometimes. These terms are usually used in context when referring to a stage of play.

What is the flop?
The flop as it’s called is actually the first stage of play involving the community cards when the first three are laid upon the table in any type of “Holdem” style of poker. There are several ways the word flop is used and if you’ve watched televised poker play, it can be confusing.

What does it mean when someone says:

“He’s seeing the flop”= generally speaking this means that “he” the player will stay in the game, stay in the pot or the ante until “he” sees the first three cards—the flop.

“He’s hitting the flop”= this is a phrase that any poker player loves to hear and it means that the flop cards which are the first three of the community laid in the center of the table are going together well with the hole cards the player is holding that were dealt face-down to “him”. The chances of putting together a winning poker hand is looking pretty good.

“The post-flop is up”= basically this describes an action such as a bet most commonly. A player has bet post flop; the player has waited after he sees the post flop cards and means that the player didn’t bet blind.

“It’s coming down to the river”= the river refers to the last hand of Holdem style poker game. The very last card laid upon the table face-up, is the river.

Learning some of these terms should get your foot in the door to a good poker game but after you’re in it’s up to you. Have fun playing poker and even more fun learning some of the new slang.

Welcome Video Poker Players…This is part two of our Jacks or Better Video Poker tutorial. In this video we’ll take a look at all the winning hand combinations, then we’ll cover a few more features, and finally we’ll play a couple of hands to get a feel for the game.First the winning hands, you can see these hands on the left side of the payout table, we’ll start from the lowest winning hand and work our way up…Jacks or better: This is the lowest winning hand and pays out 1 to 1. To hit jacks or better you need a single pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or aces. Two Pairs: This is any two pairs, in this game, there is no restriction on their values —a pair of three’s and a pair of four’s are as good as a pair of king’s and a pair of aces.Three of a kind: Three of your cards of the same value, Again there is no restriction on this, three two’s is just as good as three aces.Straight: all five of your cards in sequence for example: 4,5,6,7 and 8 - suit does not matter here.Flush: all five of your cards of the same suit, for example five spades, card values don’t matter here.

Full House: One pair and three of a kind. Once again the values are not important here - a pair of twos and three three’s is just as good as a pair of kings and three aces.

Four of a kind: all four of any card value. For Example, all 4 9’s

Straight Flush: This is a Flush (all cards of the same suit) in order, so 5,6,7,8,9 all of clubs is a straight flush.

Royal Flush: This is a straight flush starting with the 10. So a royal flush of hearts would be 10, Jack, Queen, King and the ace of hearts.

Okay, so those are the nine winning combinations in Jacks or better, now let’s see this in action. I’m playing at Spin Palace casino right now, if you try playing at another casino you may see some differences in the player screen but these basic options I’m about to show you should be there somewhere…

First lets select our coin size. On the player screen you’ll see the plus and minus sign below an icon that looks like a coin. I can raise the coin value by clicking on plus sign and lower it by clicking on the minus…

I’m going to play with a .25 cent coin size and each hand I play will be at the maximum 5 coin bet, so for each hand I play I’ll wager $1.25.

Remember: In the first video I recommended that you play the maximum number of coins for every hand. As, this is the only way to take advantage of the bonus payout on a royal flush.

Okay So I’m going to play a hand. I’ve selected my coin size (.25) now I’ll hit the “Bet Max” Button and we’re on our way…

Now let’s see, I was just dealt 5 cards and the machine sees I have a pair of nines and it’s recommending I hold those… and for this purpose I’m going to do that, now I’m going to hit the draw button to get three more cards and…

Didn’t win anything there, but I’m going to play one more hand before I sign off…

Hit the bet max, okay so I have a pair of threes, an ace and a two, I’m going to leave it the way it is and hit draw, and I win three of a kind which pays me out (because I bet the max) 15 coins. Not Bad.

Welcome Video Poker Players!Today we’re at Spin Palace casino, we’re about to have a look at one the most popular forms of video poker anywhere - Jacks or Better Video Poker. In Jacks or Better, as with all video poker’s you are playing against the machine. Your goal is to make the best possible 5 card poker hand. The lowest possible Winning hand contains a single pair of jacks, queens, kings or aces. Now Just to clairify that, a pair of 10’s is not a winning hand as it’s value is below that of a pair of jacks. Now lets have a look at the payout table for this particular game. As you can see, each winning hand is displayed on the left–to the right you’ll see the payout for that hand, those five colums of numbers represent the number of coins bet.

So as an example, take a look at the jacks or Better line, you’ll see the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

– those are the payouts for each bet. the 1 represents a payout of one coin on a bet of one coin, the two means two coins are paid out for two coins bet. As you can see, hitting jacks or better will only allow you to break even.

Next up two pairs, now we can start making some money. if you hit two pairs you’ll make 2 to one on your bet. for example betting 2 coins will win you 4

If you look closely at the entire payout table, you’ll see that the payouts are in a logical progression, that is a jacks or better hand will always net you a payout of 1 to 1,

— three of a kind will always pay you three to one.

—That holds true for every win with the exception of the 5 coin royal flush win.

— As you can see, the first four payouts are all 250 to 1, when you get to the 5 coin win, you’ll get 4000 coins as opposed to the expected 1,250. For this reason it is recommended to always play with the maximum number of coins –conviently there is a “max bet” button on the player screen for this purpose.

One more important point to look at before we move on. Have a look at The Flush and Full House payout Values for one coin bet.

— This Example Shows values of 9 and 6 respectively, In the video poker world, this is known as a “Full Pay” machine. It is always a good idea to note these two values anytime you choose to play at a different jacks or better machine as some machines have lower payouts say 8/5. Over time, these lower payout machines will cut into your profit.

Okay that’s it for this video. In the next video in this series, we’ll look at a few more features then we’ll finish off by actually playing a couple of hands. Until then, good luck.

Be sure to visit Play Video Poker for lots more video poker information and tips.

Thanks again…
